How to get from Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) to your hotel

Compare prices and travel times for the best transfer options to Beijing

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is one of the world's busiest airports, located 32 km (20 miles) northeast of Beijing's city center. While the newer Daxing Airport gets the headlines, PEK remains the primary gateway for most international travelers. Navigating it can be overwhelming due to its sheer size. The Airport Express train is the gold standard for beating Beijing's legendary ring-road traffic jams, while DiDi (China's Uber) offers a convenient English-friendly car service if you know where to find the pickup points.

Capital Airport Express (Train)

The Capital Airport Express is the fastest and most reliable way to reach downtown Beijing (Sanyuanqiao or Dongzhimen). It connects Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 directly to the subway network. Trains run every 10-12 minutes from approx. 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM. The journey takes just 20-30 minutes, bypassing hours of potential gridlock. A one-way ticket is a flat 25 RMB ($3.50 USD).

Pros

  • Fastest option (20-30 mins).
  • Immune to Beijing's heavy traffic.
  • Cheap flat fare (25 RMB).

Cons

  • Stops running around 10:30 PM.
  • Requires a transfer to the crowded subway for final destination.
  • Luggage space can be tight during rush hour.

Taxi

Official taxis are available 24/7 at designated queues outside the Arrivals hall (T2 and T3). Drivers generally use the meter. A ride to the city center (e.g., Forbidden City / Wangfujing) typically costs 100-150 RMB ($15-$22 USD), including toll fees. Avoid touts in the terminal who offer 'fixed price' rides—they are illegal and overpriced. Note that traffic can easily double your travel time.

Pros

  • Door-to-door convenience.
  • Available 24/7 (good for late arrivals).
  • Regulated metered fares.

Cons

  • Drivers rarely speak English (have address in Chinese).
  • Subject to severe traffic jams.
  • Long queues at the taxi stand.

Rideshare (DiDi)

DiDi is the best app-based option and has an English interface (download the standalone app or use via WeChat/Alipay). It is often slightly cheaper than a taxi and eliminates the language barrier since you input the destination digitally. However, pickup points are strictly enforced in parking garages. At Terminal 3, head to Garage levels B2 (Section H). At Terminal 2, look for the designated pickup zone in Parking Garage P2 (Level 1).

Pros

  • English interface solves language barrier.
  • Cashless payment.
  • Often newer/cleaner cars than taxis.

Cons

  • Finding the garage pickup point can be tricky first-time.
  • Requires data/internet connection.
  • Traffic delays apply.

Airport Shuttle Bus

Multiple shuttle bus lines connect PEK to major districts like Xidan, Beijing Railway Station, and Fangzhuang. Tickets cost around 20-30 RMB. While cheap and guaranteeing a seat, the buses are significantly slower than the train and just as vulnerable to traffic as taxis. They are a good backup if the train has stopped running and you want to save money.

Pros

  • Direct routes to some hotels/districts.
  • Cheap (20-30 RMB).
  • Good for travelers with lots of luggage (under-bus storage).

Cons

  • Very slow due to traffic.
  • Less frequent departures than the train.
