How to get from Miami International Airport (MIA) to your hotel

Compare prices and travel times for the best transfer options to Miami

Miami International Airport (MIA) is the primary gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean. It is located just 8 miles (13 km) from Downtown Miami and about 12 miles (19 km) from South Beach. The airport is connected to the city via the 'MIA Mover' automated train, which links terminals to the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC). From there, travelers can easily access the Metrorail (train) or the Airport Express Bus to Miami Beach.

Metrorail (Orange Line)

For Downtown Miami, Brickell, or Coconut Grove, the Metrorail Orange Line is the fastest option. Take the free MIA Mover to the airport station. The train costs $2.25 and takes about 15-20 minutes to reach Government Center (Downtown) or Brickell. It bypasses the notorious I-95 traffic completely. You will need an EASY Card or ticket ($2) or can use contactless payment (Apple Pay/credit card) directly at the gate.

Pros

  • Fastest way to Downtown/Brickell.
  • Very cheap ($2.25).
  • Immune to highway traffic.

Cons

  • Does NOT go to South Beach.
  • Service frequency drops late at night.

Rideshare (Uber / Lyft)

Rideshare apps are fully operational at MIA. Pickups for Uber/Lyft are located on the Arrivals Level (Ground Level) at the middle inner curb OR on the Departures Level (Upper Level). Always check your app for the specific door number. Fares to South Beach typically range from $20 to $35, while Downtown is cheaper ($18-$25). Beware of surge pricing during major events or bad weather.

Pros

  • Door-to-door convenience.
  • Often cheaper than taxis for short trips.
  • Cashless and trackable.

Cons

  • Pickup zones can be chaotic.
  • Surge pricing applies.

Taxi

Taxis are available curbside on the Arrivals level (ground floor). Miami taxis often have a flat-rate zone system for trips to popular areas like South Beach (Region 4, approx. $35) and Downtown (Region 1/2, approx. $25-$30). However, always confirm if it's a flat rate or metered ride with the driver before departing. There is an airport surcharge ($2) embedded in fares.

Pros

  • Flat rates available for key zones.
  • Available zones usually posted on window decal.
  • No smartphone/app needed.

Cons

  • More expensive than public transit.
  • Older vehicles compared to Uber.
  • Some drivers may try to use meter instead of flat rate.
